Feedback from Blueprints Supporters:

When people ask about my education, I tell them that I learned to work in high school, to pursue what interested me in college, and to be organized in law school. However, I learned to think at Shady Hill School. Pam and I decided to stretch and give to the Blueprints for Learning Campaign in gratitude for my education, the education of our two children, and the education of future Shady Hill thinkers.

We give to Shady Hill because we want to help sustain and advance the impact the school has on the life of our children and the SHS community and because we want to support the school's leadership in the field of curricular and teacher development which not only has a huge impact at the school but in the broader scholastic community as well.

I have always liked what the artist Philip Guston had to say about creativity: he claimed that ‘creativity was based on one’s willingness to embarrass one’s self.’ As an artist, I look back at Shady Hill and am in awe of the phenomenal faculty and the innovative curriculum, both in the art classes and the seamless way in which art was woven into every aspect of the school. I am also grateful for the environment of exploration Shady Hill provides one that is safe, supportive, and caring, and allows young people to explore, experiment, take risks, and sometimes embarrass themselves—all so critical to the fostering of an adventurous, creative spirit. I am in touch with many of my friends from Shady Hill and remarkably we all have a vibrant commitment to the arts, a commitment that Shady Hill undoubtedly fostered and formed.

Feedback from Athletics:

Ms Hardy is pleased to have:

“An office with a bigger desk, with room for someone to come in and have a conversation, room to stand up and turn around, and space for 2 teachers to sit together to prepare lessons! More accessible and organized storage space! No more mopping!”

Ms Young is pleased to have:

“An opportunity to expand the curriculum. A classroom that doesn't require caution tape. Storage, storage, storage!”

Ms Travers is pleased to have:

“A heating system that works and allows the students to hear my instructions. The ability to store equipment properly and have it available at short notice. A 3rd teaching space that will give us adequate classroom space and more time with students.”

Mr. Nkala is pleased to have:

“Three courts! This means less or no travel time to rented gym space for the VII and VIII athletic program. This leaves us more time for instruction. No more squeezing through boxes to look into a box at the far end of the girls’ showers/store room.”

Mr. Henry is pleased to have:

“Three teaching areas that will accommodate our larger classes, giving older students more time on task, and provide the right size classroom for our smaller students. A space where our students can truly enjoy their physical education classes. The look on Ms. Hardy's face when the new facility became a reality.”

Feedback from Shady Hill Faculty:

It is wonderful to have freed up the schedule for the MS enough to allow more course options in science. I have been enjoying the opportunity to use the facility myself.

- Mrs. Polte (Science)

At Shady Hill, the child's experience with the arts is invaluable. Our mission states that 'true exploration takes time’, but it also takes space. My 3rd graders are now enjoying all the extra space in the new facilities and the enhanced programs the space has allowed. There needs to be enough space for third graders to be in ‘a safe environment that allows children to be curious and take risks’.
